The Census bureau started its tally of the population in 1790 originally started for tax purposes and also to determine representation needed for a political area. The following census snapshots are from the 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880 and 1920 census. It offers some support documentation as to location of the Wood family. The census search was limited to Carroll County, Deer Creek Township. Although census documents can be found back to 1790, prior to 1850 the format was quite limited. Meaning that in the earlier census, the name of the head of household was given then a tally of household members were listed in terms of age groups with no names submitted.

The 1850 census with George Robertson shown as head of household; age 30. Notice his occupation is listed as a papermaker and that his place of birth is listed as Canada. Charles A. Wood age 30 is listed as a member of the household and his place of birth is listed as Kentucky

The 1860 census. George Robertson who was Charles' business partner is listed as a merchant and his worth has grown considerably. Charles Wood is now listed as a head of household with wife Delia A. Charles' net worth has grown as well and seems to match that of Mr. Robertson. His place of birth is Kentucky and his wife and I am assuming his wife's sister Mary E. Harter have their birthplaces listed as N.Y.

The 1870 census. With corrections submitted by Dee Wood. The above family members Edward should in fact read Adelaide. Also Harriet should read Harry. Charles Wood now in his 50's has listed his occupation as a laborer but he list his place of birth as New York along with his wife Adelia. The rest of the family is listed.

The 1880 census finds little change.

The 1920 census finds William H. Wood, son of Charles A. and his wife Mary Opal Wood. His three sons Charles, Robert and John. Notice just above the Woods are the Cartwrights. Charles as head of household and Mary Angel listed with Sue Walker as sister and John Earl Walker as nephew.
